Beppu Travel Guides

When one thinks of Beppu, the first thing that comes to mind is hot springs. It is one of the leading hot spring cities in Japan and boasts the largest amount of hot springs in Japan. The number of sources and the quality of the hot springs are among the highest in the world. The steam from the hot springs can be seen rising from every corner of the city.

Beppu Onsen, Kannawa Onsen, Myoban, Kankaiji, Hamawaki, Shibaseki, Kamegawa, and Hotta Onsen are collectively called "Beppu Onsen," or Beppu Hatto.

In addition to hot springs, Beppu offers many other attractions such as rich nature, delicious gourmet food, and handicrafts. One sightseeing tour that should not be missed is the Beppu Hell Tour, which takes visitors on a tour of the strange and wonderful sights.

There are four designated national scenic spots: the cobalt-blue Sea Hell, the red-colored Pool of Blood Hell, the geyser-filled Ryumaki Hell, and the Shiraike Jigoku Hell.

When touring around the jigoku, jigoku steamed dishes made from the heat of the hells are highly recommended. Onsen egg and pudding are also recommended as souvenirs. Beppu cold noodle is another dish that should not be missed. It is eaten not only in summer but also in winter, and comparing the differences among different restaurants is one of the best parts of sightseeing in Beppu.

Beppu also produces bamboo crafts. Bamboo crafts are made one by one by craftsmen, and you can feel the warmth of the craftsmanship.
